In a post shared on X on Friday, June 5, the food regulator notified that the new rule will come into effect from July 2027, and all approved vegan food packages will be required to display the logo.
“FSSAI has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026. Effective from 1st July, 2027, all approved vegan food packages must carry the specified ‘Vegan’ logo to ensure standard compliance & consumer trust,” FSSAI said.
FSSAI introduced the logo through an amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Regulations, which was notified on May 21. The move aimed to create a clear and uniform identity for vegan products across India and prevent confusion with other food items that may contain ingredients of animal origin.
What is the new vegan logo?
The logo must feature a green-coloured “V” with a small plant or sprout at the top.
The word “VEGAN” must be written below the symbols, and the entire design should be enclosed with a green square border.
FSSAI also specified the exact design measurements for the logo to ensure uniformity across all food packages. The thickness of each arm of the “V” symbol will be 7 mm, while the width at the top will be 10 mm. The text box containing the word “VEGAN” will have a width of 7 mm, with the text itself measuring 2 mm in height.
The plant or sprout symbol above the “V” will be 3.25 mm in size and positioned 3.3 mm above the base of the “V”. A 1 mm gap will separate the “V” symbol from the “VEGAN” text, while the entire logo will be enclosed within a square border measuring 15 mm in height and width.
What is vegan food?
Vegan foods do not contain any ingredients, additives or processing aids derived from animals. A vegan diet includes only plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds. Unlike vegetarians, people who follow a vegan diet exclude milk, dairy products, ghee, paneer, honey,y and all other animal-based ingredients.
